Goals for 2024

Image
Last year both sped by in the blink of an eye and crawled by slower than molasses in January.  It was a year of change and grief so my priorities changed and I'm thankful for the time I had and for the space I took.  Much of Q4 ended up being about rest.  I'm slowly starting to pick things back up again but am still taking the time and space I need to rest and grieve.  But I know Dad liked to see what we were doing so its time to start progressing again. Looking back at last year Quilting:   1. Butterfly quilt - This hasn't changed since my post in October.  I still haven't looked at it to figure out the missing pieces and how much is done. 2. Labyrinth - This top was completed in Q1.  I did buy backing fabric for it at the beginning of November with the intention to wash it, piece it and make an appointment to go quilt the top but sadly it still sits on the dryer waiting to be washed.   3. Rainbow Quilt - This is now a completed to...

Q1 Check in

Image
Yvonne has a check in for how we are doing with this years goals.  So I thought I'd review and see how I'm coming.... This year I want to finish quilt tops for  1. Butterfly quilt - Cut out additional blocks but haven't done any sewing on this yet. 2. Labyrinth quilt. - I cut this out in January and took it to a retreat.  It took several days of the retreat  but I have the completed top.  It went together really well.   3. Rainbow Triple Four Patch  - It took some playing and designing in EQ8 but I did come up with a layout I liked.  I cut more blocks for each colour and sewed them at the retreat as well.  The top section is almost put together.   Original Layout Idea EQ8 layout.  The black lines are the blocks I've assembled. 4. Love Entwined applique (I'm just doing the centre of this quilt) - haven't touched this one yet this year.. I ordered a Cherrywood kit again this year and so will make a monarch quilt. ...

Catching Up

Image
My sister says I'm falling down on the job.  I've had create blog post on my todo list for ages.  Not sure why it hasn't gotten written.   I was thrilled with the results of the Form, Faces and Spaces Show.  Both my pieces sold!  My first two sales.  I'm over the moon.  Elaine bought Growth and blogged about it here .  My description of the Growth  piece is here .  The other piece (Rooted) was sold the day of the opening.  As my sister and I were about to leave the show, the organizer said she was writing up the receipt and was about to put a sold sign on the piece so we stayed to see that. We stopped at Demetre's for a very decadent ice cream sunday on the way home.   Pointing at the sold dot!  Rooted Top picture is Growth.   This is my Cherrywood Challenge Piece complete with rulers to show that it is the correct size for the challenge. Detail 1 Detail 2 Unfortunately it was not selected as a fi...

April Quilting Goals Review

Image
Well, I did get the Cherrywood Challenge quilt done and submitted yesterday so I am really pleased with what I accomplished in April.  I won't post the whole piece until after the challenge closes and probably not until after the judging. The Abstraction quilt didn't get any attention. Love Entwined did get some work.  I've started to stitch the stems down for vase 3.  I do have more bias prepared.  I need to pin the next level of stems in place.  There are also some of the other little pieces partially prepared. The little scrappy blocks also got finished today.  There are 10 pink blocks.   linking up with Patty's One Monthly Goal Windup  and the Soscrappy Rainbow Challenge

April Quilting Goals

Image
The big goal this month is to make my Cherrywood Challenge quilt.  I have sketches of some of the components.  Need to start stitching and figure out how they go together.  The end result and the sketch rarely turn out the same.  No pictures of that one for a bit but hopefully it goes smoothly. For Love Entwined, I want to get the little pieces at the base of vase 3 stitched as well as the vines and possibly the vase.  If all of vase 3 is stitched, that would be perfect, but If I can get the foundation finished that would be good.  I don't think the challenge quilt will need hand applique so if I can prep the pieces for Love Entwined, it can continue to be my zoom meeting project.  I've marked some placement guides for vase 3 and made some more bias for the vines.  So I can start that stitching The Abstraction quilt needs have its threads tied in and the binding added.  That's good tv work.  I had an appointment to go quilt another...

November Quilting Goals

Image
How did it get to be November already?!? I forgot to do a blogpost last week about what got done in October.  I did get some applique done on the moondance quilt. I'm slowly building the quilt up.  As a block gets all the applique I can do entirely on that block, it gets stitched to its neighbour.  There are pieces pinned to the block - those are the pieces that need to go over a seam.  I could stitch a couple more seams in that bottom row.  The goal is to work with as small a background area as I can.  I don't want to have to deal with the entire quilt top as I stitch down the flowers and dragon flies.  This month I'll continue to stitch down shapes.  I'd like to get the row I'm currently working on into its 3 four patches and a two patch at the end of the row.  Then I think there is one more set of 4 patches before I start assembling larger four patches.   I went out to Whirls n Swirls last week and quilted my Northern Lights quil...

March Goals

Image
Lots of good intentions for March but not a lot of progress.  I was side tracked by other things. The blocks for the Longtime Gone quilt did get completed I'm having fun with this quilt.   When I traced the shapes and cut them for the applique on Love Entwined, I made a fundamental applique error.  I neglected to number the pattern and the tracings.  So I spent all of one Monday Sewing Session sorting the pieces out and numbering.  In the end I couldn't find a couple of pieces or figure out were a couple went so I tossed them and traced the missing ones.  Everything is numbered now and I did get a few pieces prepped and pinned in place but I still have a bunch more to prep.  Baby Steps.   I can get a long way with baby steps. The guild BOM went back on the design wall in the layout for the smaller of the two options.  The more I look at it, the more I don't like the row of northwind blocks down the left side.  They are no...

January Goals Success

Image
January has been a very productive month quilting wise.  My goals were to finish the blocks for my Long Time Gone class, finish the components of Abstraction and as a bonus complete the top and to finish my Poinsettia block. These were my Longtime Gone blocks.  We needed to make the two bow tie blocks and the three blocks with flying geese.  All were completed well before the class so I was pleased.  I haven't cut out the pieces we were assigned for next month but that will come soon. The components for Abstraction went together very quickly and I was thrilled to finish the top.  The binding is also made.  A lady from my guild gave me a quilting suggestion which I rather liked.  I'm still considering the quilting.  I think this may end up waiting until I can get out to the long arm studio.  We are currently under lock down so it will be another month at least. Finally, the December block from Kathy K Wylie's workshop is now finished.  I ...

November Goal

Image
I keep getting sidetracked at the beginning of the month and forgetting to create a goal to link up with Patty's One Monthly Goal   Over the summer I didn't do much quilting but spent some time working on cleaning up my Lightroom Library and cataloging photos and learning more about photoshop.  The last couple of months, I've puttered at my version of the guilds BOM for Canada's Sesquicentennial in 2017, finished the top for my Cherrywood challenge and started some online classes with a class pass from Thimbles and Things    One of the classes was walking through a slightly different way to approaching paper piecing a Violet Craft pattern (elephant, wolf, leopard, unicorn etc).  I really don't like paper piecing but keep seeing patterns I like that require paper piecing.  So I took the class and learned a new technique.  The instructor had us download the free butterfly pattern to start with and I also downloaded the Field Mouse and that was the ...

July OMG: More milkweed

Image
Oops!  Forgot to post the completed list for June.   I did get Milkweed 3 done in time for show n tell at our Guild meeting at the beginning of the month.  It is now hanging in the entrance way  The quilting was inspired by a fern in a bunch of flowers I had bought for myself.  I took it downstairs and had it sitting near the sewing machine while I quilted.  This wallhanging has a facing rather than binding. The other goal for June was to finish my Cherrywood challenge quilt for the Diana Challenge.  I was making good progress when Cherrywood announced an extension to Dec 31 due to the COVID 19 pandemic.  I finished the step I was working on, washed the piece to get the washout marker out and ironed it.  Its now ready for the pieces to be appliqued on but I've paused to consider if I want to make any changes since I have extra time.  I'll get going on the centre as that won't change.  Maybe by the time that's done, I'll have de...

June OMG Plans

Image
My first quilting goal is to get my Cherry wood challenge quilt made and submit the picture.  I have a design I think I should be able to complete easily in the month.  I've made a couple of samples of one part out of other material to ensure I know how to do it with the actual material so I think I'm ready to begin.   The second goal is to quilt my Milkweed 3 quilt and get a start on the final winter milkweed quilt.  I have photos selected to base the winter quilt on, I just need to decide how I'm blending them.  I finished the top yesterday and sandwiched it so its ready to quilt this week.  We are having a virtual guild meeting on Thursday so it would be nice to have it quilted by then.  Its about 20 X 30 so not a big wall hanging.   I'm thrilled with the amount of progress over the last few days with this piece.  I'm also loving how its come together.  It was so nice to be chatting with the ladies at Elaine's virtual retrea...

Cherrywood Challenge 2019

Image
I've looked at the Cherrywood Challenges every year for the last three years but hadn't purchased a kit until the 2019 challenge was announced.  In fact, to keep myself from backing out again, I pre-ordered the kit before the theme was announced.  Then it came out that the theme was Bob Ross and we'd be getting fabrics hand dyed in the colours he used most in his paintings.  The kit came in November and I had until July 1st at 11:59 pm CST to complete a 20 inch square wall hanging.   I knew at the time I was retiring and so there would be lots of time to work on a 20 inch wall hanging.  Or Not.  I managed to procrastinate until June then having missed both Quilt Canada challenges, I got busy and came up with a design for the Cherrywood Challenge.   Initially I was going to use one of my Iceland Photos as inspiration but didn't feel I had enough time to go there and solve some problems (no white fabric, where's the bleach to make snow).  Anywa...
