Filling baskets and flower making

Last Sunday I spent the day at Elaine’s for a sit ‘n sew day.  I spent the morning and a bit of time after lunch making the 9 patch blocks for the flowers which are the round after the stars for this quilt.  I had the half square triangles all prepared so it was a case of laying them out and stitching.  In the end I ended up making a few extra half square triangles. I hadn’t used any of the blue ones and didn’t want just three of the 20 flowers with blue.  I’m considering make some additional half square triangles as the next lot will be combine with a large triangle to be stylized leaves for the flowers.  I’m not sure I want royal blue and sky blue leaves

After getting these done, I started to trace the appliqué pieces for the baskets.  I trace onto freezer paper, cut them out and then press to the right side of the fabric. Sometimes I then trace around the freezer paper so that I don’t need to use it as I work.   Some times I turn under the edges in advance but these are relatively simple so I just pinned the shapes in place with the freezer paper on top and needle turn as I go.   If you look closely at the leaf in the bottom left you’ll see where I was working when I stopped to take a picture.  There are buds to go into the end of the curved pieces which is why there is still a bit of freezer paper on those two pieces.  There is also a flower head to go on the end of the centre stem of each basket.  I haven’t picked out colours for those yet.  I have moved the stars around a bit picking out how I want them ordered to attach to the centre once the appliqué is finished.

After a walk this afternoon, I’ll continue stitching the leaves and vines down.  Linking up with Kathy’s Slow Stitching Sunday.  It’s suppose to warm up to 8 C today so I’m waiting for the afternoon to enjoy the sunshine and warmth.

  1. This is a stunning project! Lucky you having some warm weather. It's been snowing again in the UK (twice in one month is a unusual!)

    1. Thanks Sarah. I'm enjoying working on it. We should be having the snow not you! We have had a relatively mild winter this year baring a bad cold spell at the beginning of the year.

    1. Thanks Laura. The next big part is going to need some stay stitching as there is applique and bias edges.

  3. I like the piece you are now adding applique baskets to. A lot of work already done in those pieced blocks.

    1. Thanks Karen. The pieced blocks are almost all hand pieced so they were a purse project -- a small package in my purse that came out to be worked on at meetings and when I had time to fill in. Very useful. The centre block is getting folded neatly and spending time in the purse as well.

  6. A lovely quilt pattern indeed. In regards to your applique with freezer paper, am I correct that you press it down and use it as a guide for needleturn?

    1. Thanks Jill. Yes the freezer paper does get pressed to the fabric. It sticks nicely and I can reuse the template several times so thankfully wont have to cut out the hundreds that I'll need for the outer border.
